Abundance
Abundance — 24 x 24"
This oil painting — a bold arrangement of pineapple, papaya, lemons, and mango — brings depth, color, and life to any room.
Inspired by a visit to Fernando Botero’s museum in Colombia, I embraced his grandiose vision of everyday subjects, letting the fruits dominate the canvas with a joyful, outsized presence. The composition’s large, voluptuous forms echo Botero’s celebration of abundance while the brushwork and light draw on the impressionist sensibilities of Renoir and Monet.
This work is deeply personal. It began during a season of recovery from cancer — I spent ten months in a hospital bed undergoing 49 chemotherapy treatments and 32 radiation treatments. Much of the painting was started from my bed, during a time when the chemotherapy had severely weakened my bone marrow.
Completing the piece took over a year and marked my first finished painting after that period of recovery.
Each layer of paint carries that journey of vulnerability, fragility, endurance, and the slow return of strength. I continue to grow stronger each year.
The large-scale juxtaposition of fruits fills the surface, inviting viewers to linger on texture, color contrasts, and the warm, luminous atmosphere. The impressionist approach softens edges and celebrates light, while the exaggerated scale gives the subject a celebratory quality.
‘Abundance’ is about survival and the ever giving gifts of nature. May ‘Abundance’ be a reminder that life and beauty persist even through the unexpected trials of life.
