Maracas Lookout

Maracas — Trinidad Lookout oil on canvas, diptych pair 10x10”

This diptych began from a single photograph taken at the Maracas lookout: the horizon of sea and distant mountains softened by humidity, the immediate foreground anchored by a bougainvillea tree in bloom. Each panel carries a different focus and mood while remaining part of the same view. One canvas captures the expanse — the cool, rolling distance of ocean and ridge, the pale heat of sky — painted with layered glazes to suggest depth and atmosphere. The companion panel brings the bougainvillea forward: saturated magenta and coral petals rendered with thicker, more abstract strokes and sunlit planes to contrast the hinterland’s softness.

This work is an exploration of memory, history and place: the lookout’s vast serenity paired with the immediate, floral exuberance that drew me to pause and frame this scene.
